Deshedding Treatment in Barrie, ON

We remove the loose undercoat before it ends up on your couch, clothes, and car.

What a Deshedding Treatment Actually Does

Your dog sheds. That's normal. But when you're vacuuming twice a day and lint-rolling before every meeting, it's time for a deshed. We use specialized tools and techniques to pull out the dead undercoat that's already loose. It's not a haircut. We're not shaving your dog. We're just removing what's ready to fall out anyway.

The process starts with a thorough bath using deshedding shampoo and conditioner. These formulas loosen the undercoat without stripping natural oils. Then we blow-dry with high-velocity dryers that push out even more loose fur. Finally, we use undercoat rakes and deshedding tools to comb through every section. What comes out is shocking. Most owners can't believe how much fur was hiding in there.

Double-coated breeds like Huskies, Labs, and Golden Retrievers benefit the most. But any dog that sheds can use a deshed treatment. We see clients from across Barrie and Innisfil who book seasonally, especially during spring and fall coat blows. Some come monthly. It depends on your dog and your tolerance for fur tumbleweeds.

How It's Different from Regular Grooming

Our Full Service Dog Grooming includes a bath, brush, nail trim, and ear cleaning. A deshedding treatment goes deeper. We spend extra time on the undercoat with tools designed specifically for fur reduction. Regular slicker brushes just skim the surface. Deshedding rakes and Furminators grab the dense layer underneath.

The appointment takes longer. A standard groom might be 60-90 minutes. A deshed session can run 90-120 minutes depending on coat condition and size. We're methodical. We work in sections, checking our progress as we go. You'll see the difference when you pick up your dog. The coat looks sleeker, feels lighter, and your pup will be more comfortable.

If your dog also needs a trim or specific breed styling, we can combine services. Check out our Breed Specific Grooming options. But if shedding is your main concern, the deshed treatment is the answer.

Why Your Home Stays Cleaner Longer

Here's what happens after a deshed. You'll notice less fur on the floor. Your couch stays cleaner. Your car doesn't look like a fur factory. The effect lasts 4-8 weeks depending on breed, season, and how much your dog blows coat. Some clients book every six weeks. Others come in twice a year during heavy shedding seasons.

We're not stopping shedding completely. That's impossible unless you shave the dog bald, and we don't recommend that for double-coated breeds. What we're doing is front-loading the shed. All that loose fur comes out here, in our tub, instead of all over your house. It's damage control.

Regular deshedding also helps your dog's skin breathe. Matted undercoat traps moisture and can cause hot spots or irritation. Removing it improves air circulation and keeps the coat healthier overall. Dogs usually feel lighter and cooler after a session, especially in summer.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Drop off your dog at our Barrie location. We'll do a quick coat check to see how much undercoat is ready to come out. If your dog is matted, we'll let you know. Mats need to be brushed or clipped out before we can deshed effectively. That's a separate step, and we'll talk through options.

During the treatment, we bathe, blow-dry, and deshed in stages. We take breaks if your dog needs them. Most dogs tolerate it well. Some even fall asleep during the blow-dry. If your dog is anxious or this is their first groom, mention it when you book. We also offer Puppy Grooming for younger dogs who need a gentler introduction.

Pickup is easy. We'll show you the before-and-after and give you brushing tips for home maintenance. A quick brush between appointments helps, but it won't replace a professional deshed. The tools we use and the volume of fur we remove just aren't replicable at home. We also serve Springwater and surrounding areas if you're outside Barrie proper.

Pricing and How to Book

Deshedding treatment pricing depends on your dog's size and coat condition. Small dogs start around $70. Medium dogs run $85-$110. Large or giant breeds can be $120-$160. If your dog is severely matted or hasn't been groomed in months, there may be an additional fee for extra time. We'll always give you a quote before we start.

You can book online or call us directly. We recommend scheduling 2-3 weeks out during busy seasons (spring and fall). If you're also interested in Nail Trimming Services or other add-ons, let us know when you book. We'll build the appointment to fit your dog's needs.

First-time clients: bring your dog's vaccination records. We require proof of rabies, distemper, and bordetella. It keeps everyone safe. If you have questions about what your dog needs, just ask. We're here to help.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I get a deshedding treatment for my dog?

It depends on the breed and season. Double-coated dogs like Huskies or Golden Retrievers benefit from deshedding every 6-8 weeks, especially during spring and fall coat blows. Single-coated breeds that shed year-round (like Labs) do well with monthly or every-other-month treatments. We'll recommend a schedule based on your dog's coat and how much shedding you're dealing with at home.

Will deshedding hurt my dog or damage their coat?

No. We're only removing loose, dead undercoat that's already detached from the follicle. It's the same fur that would end up on your floor or furniture. The tools we use are designed to grab undercoat without cutting or pulling healthy guard hairs. Most dogs find it relaxing, especially the blow-dry phase. If your dog has mats or tangles, we'll address those separately and gently.

Can I just brush my dog at home instead of getting a deshedding treatment?

You can brush at home, and it helps between appointments. But home brushing doesn't reach the volume of undercoat we remove with professional tools and a high-velocity dryer. A slicker brush or regular comb works on surface fur. Deshedding rakes, undercoat rakes, and our dryer setup pull out the dense layer underneath. Most clients are shocked by how much fur comes out during a professional deshed compared to what they get at home.
