Breed Specific Grooming in Barrie

Your poodle shouldn't look like a golden retriever, and we make sure it doesn't.

Why Breed Standards Matter

Every breed has a coat that does something specific. Poodles have hair that keeps growing. Terriers have wiry topcoats that need hand-stripping. Schnauzers need that signature beard and leg furnishings. If you just buzz everything down, you're fighting the coat instead of working with it.

We've groomed hundreds of dogs across Barrie, Innisfil, and Springwater. We know what a proper schnauzer cut looks like. We know how to scissor a bichon into a round head without making it lopsided. We know when to use thinning shears and when to leave length. That's not something you pick up from a YouTube video.

Breed-specific grooming isn't just about looks. It's about keeping your dog comfortable. A properly stripped terrier coat sheds less and stays cleaner. A poodle with a well-maintained clip doesn't mat as fast. When we groom to the breed standard, your dog's coat actually works better.

What We Do for Different Breeds

Poodles and doodles get hand-scissored faces, clean feet, and whatever body length you want. We can do a full show cut or a practical pet trim that still looks like a poodle. Terriers get their furnishings shaped and their topcoats either clipped or stripped depending on what you're after. Schnauzers get that classic look with the skirt, beard, and eyebrows. Cockers get their ears thinned out so they don't trap moisture.

We also handle the breeds people think are 'easy' but really aren't. Labs and goldens benefit from our Deshedding Treatment because their double coats shed like crazy. Huskies and shepherds need undercoat work, not a shave-down. Shih tzus and maltese need regular trims to avoid matting, and we keep their faces clean so they can actually see. If you've got a mixed breed, we figure out what coats are in the mix and groom accordingly.

First time here? We'll talk through what you want and what's realistic for your dog's coat. If you're prepping for a show, tell us. If you just want your dog to look sharp and stay comfortable, we'll find the right balance. Every dog that comes through gets a Full Service Dog Grooming approach tailored to their breed and lifestyle.

Breed Cuts We Do Regularly

Poodle cuts are our bread and butter. Lamb trim, continental, sporting, teddy bear - we do them all. Doodles usually get a variation on the poodle trim because that's what their coat responds to best. Terriers (westies, scotties, cairns, wire fox) get their classic looks with tight bodies and full furnishings. We hand-strip if you want the traditional finish, or we can clipper it for a softer pet version.

Spaniels get feathering shaped on the ears, chest, and legs. We thin out the ear hair so it doesn't get gross. Schnauzers get the full treatment - tight body, full beard, shaped eyebrows, and leg furnishings that don't drag on the ground. Shih tzus and lhasas can go short and practical or longer with a topknot, depending on how much brushing you want to do at home.

We also see a lot of bichons, maltese, yorkies, and mixed breeds that need breed-informed cuts. Even if your dog isn't a purebred, we look at the coat type and groom it properly. A yorkie-poo still has silky hair that mats if you let it go too long. A schnoodle still needs that face work. We've been doing this long enough to know what works.

Keeping Your Dog's Coat Right Between Grooms

Breed-specific cuts look great when you leave, but they need maintenance. Poodles and doodles need brushing every few days or they mat at the roots. Terriers with stripped coats should come back every 8-10 weeks. Clipped terriers can go a bit longer. Spaniels need their ears checked and brushed weekly because that's where mats hide.

If your dog's coat is high-maintenance, we'll be honest about it. Some breeds need professional grooming every 6-8 weeks or the coat falls apart. Others can go 10-12 weeks if you're brushing at home. We also do Nail Trimming Services between full grooms if you want to stretch it out a bit. And if you've got a puppy, start them early with our Puppy Grooming so they learn to tolerate the process.

Dogs in Barrie deal with snow, mud, and road salt half the year. Breeds with longer leg furnishings pick up everything. We'll show you how to do a quick brush-out at home and where to focus. A little work between appointments makes a huge difference in how your dog's coat holds up.

Book a Breed-Specific Groom

We're in Barrie and we groom dogs from all over, including Angus and surrounding areas. Call us or book online. Let us know what breed you've got and what kind of cut you're after. If you've got photos of what you want, bring them. If you're not sure, we'll walk you through the options.

Pricing depends on the breed, coat condition, and how much work the cut takes. A poodle in good shape costs less than a matted doodle that hasn't been groomed in six months. We'll give you a quote when you book. Most breed-specific grooms take 2-3 hours depending on the dog. We don't rush it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a poodle cut cost?

It depends on the size and coat condition. A toy poodle in good shape usually runs $80-$100. A standard poodle that's matted or hasn't been groomed in months can go $150-$180. We'll give you an exact price when you book based on what your dog needs.

Can you hand-strip my terrier or do you only clipper?

We do both. Hand-stripping takes longer and costs more, but it keeps the coat texture right and the color vibrant. If you just want a clean pet trim, we can clipper it and still make it look like a terrier. Tell us what you're after and we'll make it happen.

My doodle's coat mats constantly. What cut should I get?

Shorter is easier. A lot of doodle owners want the fluffy teddy bear look, but if you're not brushing every other day, it turns into a matted mess. We usually recommend a half-inch to one-inch body with a longer face and legs. It still looks like a doodle, but it's way more manageable between grooms.
